While 2009 was arguably the legal industry’s worst year in the last half-century, job statistics for February show improvement for lawyers and other legal workers battered by the bad economy. Last month, the legal sector lost only 100 jobs, the Am Law Daily reports, compared to 1,100 jobs in January, 2,100 in December, 2,900 in November, and 5,800 in October, according to seasonally adjusted figures by the Bureau of Labor Statistics . Considering that the legal sector has shed an astonishing 37,100 positions since February of last year, many economists see February’s employment numbers as a sign of improvement

The legal industry has long been dominated by men and, despite a recent influx of women to the law field, a new study seems to confirm that “the good old boy network” is alive and well. The study, led by economist Bentley Coffey of Clemson University in South Carolina, examined the relationship between a person’s success in the legal profession and the masculinity of their name. Women lawyers with masculine-sounding first names have better odds of becoming a judge than their counterparts with feminine names, the study found.
