JD Supra: use it to get published and market yourself Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

In our Trends series ( click here ) on the contract attorney market we have tried to present multiple ways to raise your profile by getting published and thereby marketing yourself.   Despite the universal concern over the current economic climate, many Posse List members have repositioned themselves.  And this repositioning has allowed Posse List members to find more creative ways to raise their profiles. Yes, it’s difficult.  No shit.  But we are trying to throw out to you options, alternatives, and possibilities.  We are trying to be a positive in a market turned crap by the financial meltdown and its attendant cost cutting, and an ever developing technology that means more accurate and efficient means of conducting searches as well as more tools to monitor and control costs (including performance metrics).    But in spite of all the challenges you will face trying to hit the “exit” button and get out of contract legal work, be comforted by the fact that scores of Posse List members are doing it, and have been successful at doing it.  The best news:  we are working in a part of the legal industry (well, most of us are) that is unusual because it is open to sharing and collaboration, through publications, quality conferences, trade shows, and peer networking organizations such as LegalTech ,   ABATech , the ILSL Conference , Solo Practice University , etc., etc.

Mobile Advertising’s Best-kept Secret Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Jeremy Copp, CEO of Rapid Mobile Media, argues the case for vanilla-flavoured SMS as a prime mobile advertising medium The mobile advertising market is growing in size at a prodigious rate, but in absolute terms, is still tiny in value compared to other media such as print, broadcast and online. There is a perception within the advertising industry that the mobile space is a difficult one to address, with limited inventory and reach, compromised display banner ad formats, and a lack of metrics to provide proof of a return on investment

DOJ’s antitrust investigation of credit derivatives could have wide ranging effects Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

A few weeks ago we posted the news that the DOJ had launched an antitrust investigation into how dealers provide credit derivatives prices (see our previous post by clicking here ). Two recent articles in the Financial Times indicates it opens a tussle between regulators and Wall Street.   As one article states “in a week when Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan released turbo-charged trading results for the second quarter (which amply illustrate how the decline of some rival dealers has reinforced their dominance), the DoJ’s move suggests that the future for such institutions may not be so rosy”.

Cadwalader’s new manpower model: contract attorneys Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

In July 2009, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft put 34 associates on an involuntary sabbatical.  Now, as reported by Above the Law ( click here ) the firm is offering to hire them back as contract attorneys, with possible hourly pay between $45 and $65.  The web site Law and More ( click here ) follows up with two major issues emerging with that development:  (1) will Cadwalader be the “first mover” on the predicted new manpower model for the law firm, and (2) will former associates accept this? The articles also quote the figure of $65 an hour as being the top rate in the New York Metro area for contract attorneys.  A few points: 1.

Micro Economy Friday, July 31st, 2009

Colin White, UK Chief Executive of Oxygen8 Communications, examines the market potential for micropayments Demand for micropayments is increasing fast, as social networking and dating sites wake up to the benefits of taking small subscriptions via secure SMS or voice billing services. Added to this, and as part of the Digital Britain report, the Government’s body for business innovation in technology, the Technology Strategy Board, has announced a £10 million investment to work, at least in part, with industry partners to create and trial new models, including micropayments for online content and video on demand. But with the organisations receiving only 66 pence in every £1 for micropayments due to network charges, compared with 96 pence for credit card transactions, there is a very real danger that the market for micropayments for a range of online goods and services could be severely constrained

Digital Marketers Need to Improve Their Own Marketing, says ad:tech Friday, July 31st, 2009

The UK digital marketing industry needs to be more clear in how it markets itself if it is to make the most of the growing appetite for UK business investment in online and digital marketing according to independent research commissioned ahead of this year’s ad:tech London. The research, conducted among over 900 visitors to last year’s show, reveals that nearly 48% of respondents expected to assign over 30% of their budget to digital marketing over the next 12 months, an increase of 9% since last year. The biggest reason for this level of investment was the fact that for over two thirds of respondents (62%) believed that online marketing delivered greater ROI than offline marketing channels. The research also demonstrates the need for greater clarity in the way digital marketers position their services

Bango Launches Wi-fi Billing for Smartphones Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Bango, the mobile web payments and analytics company, has launched the first wi-fi-enabled operator billing service for Smartphones.  The new service targets the growing base of Smartphones, such as the Blackberry and iPhone, which often connect to the web via wi-fi, bypassing the mobile network operators. The Bango service allows Smartphone users to pay for content on their phone bills through the same click-to-pay experience, despite being connected outside of the operator’s network. Without its ‘Wi-fi on-bill’ payment capability, says Bango, Smartphone users would be redirected to credit card payment processes, leading to lower conversion rates and lost sales for content providers
