Paging AIM: Why Does Software Always Get Worse? Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Two unpleasant bouts with updated software have led me to formulate Wolfe’s First Law of Programming: An upgraded, enhanced, or otherwise supposedly improved software release will always perform more poorly than the rev which it replaces. My two cases in point are AIM 6.9.15.1 — you gotta love their configuration control — and Time Warner Cable’s latest electronic programming guide

Oracle Deployment Reduces Time to Market Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Central and Eastern Europe fixed-line and mobile operator Telefónica O2 Czech Republic has successfully deployed Oracle Communications’ Unified Inventory Management as part of its transformed, end-to-end business support system and operations support system (BSS/OSS) architecture With multiple existing in-house and third-party inventory systems, Telefónica O2 Czech Republic needed to define, manage and unify its customer services and associated logical resources (such as phone numbers and IP addresses) and physical resources (such as switches and routers) to reduce service introduction times and automate service fulfilment. Ness Technologies, Oracle’s partner in the Czech Republic, managed the project and, within three months, successfully deployed Oracle Communications Unified Inventory Management to provide both a technical customer service catalogue and inventory as part of the end-to-end architecture.

Protect and Prosper Friday, August 21st, 2009

Hugh McCartney, CEO at Cloudmark, investigates how consumers’ security concerns may be hampering their uptake of mobile operators’ value added services Mobile data services deliver additional revenues for mobile operators worldwide, and as non-voice related revenues become an increasingly integral part of operators’ strategies, they must work to ensure that these revenues are protected and future proof. According to recent research carried out among consumers by Cloudmark, nearly two thirds can’t manage a week without their mobile phone. But while this reliance on mobile phones bodes well for the industry, the adoption of mobile services such as mobile banking, mobile commerce and mobile marketing is by no means assured

Squared Deal Monday, August 17th, 2009

Nick Lane, CEO of mobile research specialist mobileSQUARED, tells David Murphy why he thinks predictions for the value of the UK mobile advertising business are way too high DM: So Nick, tell us a little about your background if you would NL: I started out on a publication called Telecoms Pricing Bulletin in 1996, then moved to Informa at the start of 2000 as the Editor of IP Core Network Analyst, moving on to Editor of 3G Mobile, and then at the end of 2006, I was appointed Principal Analyst for mobile content and services. This involved overseeing the report writing and editorial direction and I also had some input into the forecasting, and we were responsible, in fact for that figure for mobile advertising, $11.3 billion per year by 2011, that everyone always seems to quote.

Roaming Free Friday, August 14th, 2009

Well maybe not free perhaps, but with the new EU regs, I should at least be able to use my mobile while I’m away for the next two weeks without running up too huge a bill. We will be updating the site over the next couple of weeks, but having been persuaded to take a couple of weeks off, and since the job of updating the site mostly comes down to me, it’s possible that our coverage of the mobile marketing scene may be slightly less comprehensive than usual for the rest of the month. Normal service will be resumed when I return, but in the meantime, if you’re missing your mobile marketing fix, just click around the Category list in the right-hand sidebar to catch up on some of the stories you might have missed

Trend Report: Reduced Budgets Lead to Growing Reliance on Contract Attorneys Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Corporate legal departments are keeping more work in-house these days to reduce costs.   For many, this means more work and fewer people to do it. To that end, many companies are taking advantage of the high quality of talent on the market now by increasing the use of contract attorneys. While using outside counsel is still a necessity for certain highly specialized work, many corporate law departments are re-evaluating and increasing the work can be done internally.   Often, that work consists of routine matters, such as patent applications, document reviews, low-level litigation and contract administration. However, as law departments lean more heavily on temporary legal professionals, the project work is not always routine

PA Releases Spectrum Report Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Management, systems and technology consultancy PA Consulting Group, has completed a report for Ofcom to predict any potential pressure on spectrum availability across the UK over the next 15 to 20 years. Spectrum is a finite and valuable resource, and PA’s report shows both supply and demand for spectrum under a number of different scenarios, ranging from high growth with very high demand for downloads and video streaming over wireless, to a 'contracting market' scenario where nervousness about security and privacy lead people to rely less on wireless transmission. PA's report shows the range of conditions under which spectrum would be readily available to meet demand, as well as the levels of growth that would be needed to reach a point where spectrum might begin to limit rollout of new, high bandwidth services
