New Poll Shows Reality Dawning Monday, July 20th, 2009

ABC news provides a helpful round up of the latest national poll on national politics, in PDF with plenty of detail, that shows a continued fall in approval ratings for the Obama administration, in nearly every area of domestic policy. These polls could make it more difficult for Obama and Congress to impose health-care socialism, so that’s something to celebrate; it is also striking that opposition to another stimulus package has grown to two thirds. After three failed stimulus attempts, could it be that people are figuring out the scam here?

Figure out your alternative career field for yourself: this is “about: transitioning to your own business, one with low overhead and a predictable monthly income, all while ‘doing something you love.’” … I hope he’s describing his own passion, and not his advice to lawyers , as there’s an incredible amount of money to be made in traditional businesses. But whatever he’s arguing, I would be interested in learning more about Berman’s websites and their profitability.

"Mr. Smith, Tear Down This Website" Friday, July 17th, 2009

This isn’t exactly shocking, but it’s still amusing that a major beltway “ideological” group managed to get caught red-handed trying to prostitute itself: The American Conservative Union asked FedEx for a check for $2 million to $3 million in return for the group’s endorsement in a bitter legislative dispute, then flipped and sided with UPS after FedEx refused to pay. For the $2 million plus, ACU offered a range of services that included: “Producing op-eds and articles written by ACU’s Chairman David Keene and/or other members of the ACU’s board of directors.

John Law and the Invention of Modern Finance Friday, July 17th, 2009

John Law may have died in disgrace after his Mississippi System failed in 1720, but government and its cheerleaders in the economics profession continue to embrace his ideas, believing that the printing of money can lift an economy from the doldrums. They believe enlightened central bankers know just how much money an economy requires, or just how high or low interest rates must be to ensure prosperity. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth

Krugman Touts Austrian Theory! (Sort of) Friday, July 17th, 2009

Paul Krugman, who tells us that assets and capital are homogeneous when it comes to economic policy, suddenly claims that there were malinvestments during the boom! (Actually, he does not use the M-word, as he would not know what it means, but I digress.) The Great One writes: Financial firms, we now know, directed vast quantities of capital into the construction of unsellable houses and empty shopping malls. They increased risk rather than reducing it, and concentrated risk rather than spreading it.

Are Patents "Monopolies"? Monday, July 13th, 2009

On occasion you get some defender of patents who is upset when we use the m-word to describe these artificial state-granted monopoly rights. For example here one Dale Halling, a patent attorney (surprise!) posts about “The Myth that Patents are a Monopoly” and writes, ” People who suggest a patent is a monopoly are not being intellectually honest and perpetuating a myth to advance a political agenda.” Well, let’s see. First, see my post Epstein and Patents , noting that the pro-patent Epstein writes: Patented goods are subject to a lawful monopoly created by the state in order to induce their creation.

A Storied Career: Much Re-Tweeted Storytelling Items Demonstrate Buzz Sunday, July 12th, 2009

It’s time for another one of my roundups of storytelling news and views that have been experiencing considerable buzz in the Twitterverse. If these much-re-tweeted items align with what I like to cover in A Storied Career, I list them here every month or so

Bailey WorkPlay: I Am Your Manager Now Listen To Me Sunday, July 12th, 2009

In an organization, nothing starts a mad fit of eyerolling and quizzical looks among employees quite like management decrees. It’s not unlike the images we have of royal decrees being issues in olden times. From atop his tower, the king stands before his subjects and issues proclamations that often have little positive bearing on their lives (e.g., your taxes will be increased because I want to fight a war in a land you’ve never heard of – or – this is your new queen, now bow down and worship her).

"The Financial Crisis and the Systemic Failure of the Economics Profession" Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

That is the title of a new paper in the latest issue of Critical Review, by Colander, Goldberg, Haas, Juselius, Kirman, Lux, and Sloth. The article is not yet online, but the abstract is here : Economists not only failed to anticipate the financial crisis; they may have contributed to it–with risk and derivatives models that, through spurious precision and untested theoretical assumptions, encouraged policy makers and market participants to see more stability and risk sharing than was actually present. Moreover, once the crisis occurred, it was met with incomprehension by most economists because of models that, on the one hand, downplay the possibility that economic actors may exhibit highly interactive behavior; and, on the other, assume that any homogeneity will involve economic actors sharing the economist’s own putatively correct model of the economy, so that error can stem only from an exogenous shock.

Entrapment and Discrimination Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

The Department for Work and Pensions have been testing employers’ adherence to the discrimination laws by sending out bogus job applications from fictitious people with foreign names. They have found that employers ”still discriminate against people solely on the basis of having an ethnic minority name.” Employers are up in arms about the DWP’s tactics but the DWP says it will use the research to help judge levels of discrimination in the jobs market. The problem of course is that the law is an ineffective weapon against discrimination

The Benefits of Cooperation Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

A report published by the CBI and recruitment consultants Harvey Nash shows that employers and staff are working together to protect jobs by increasing flexible working and by freezing pay and recruitment. The CBI hails this saying that one of the recession’s “most positive and striking aspects has been the commitment of many businesses and their staff to work together to try to trim costs and save jobs”. It is indeed a welcome trend, although unfortunately there are many companies and staff, who have a diametrically opposed position
