Quintessential Resumes and Cover Letters Tips: The T-Formation or 2-column Cover Letter Saturday, November 21st, 2009A particularly effective way to deploy the specifics of an ad or job posting to your advantage is to use a two-column format (also known as a “T-formation” letter) in which you quote in the left-hand column specific qualifications that come right from the employer’s want ad and in the right-hand column, your attributes that meet those qualifications. The two-column format is extremely effective when you possess all the qualifications for a job, but it can even sell you when you lack one or more qualification.

“Word bullets” are a way to make your cover letter stand out. Word bullets (which can be used with regular bullets), also break up the text and are excellent for spotlighting words or phrases from the ad or job posting you’re responding to. By pulling these words out of the ad, you can focus your letter sharply on how you meet the requirements that relate to those words

If he hadn’t pulled out all the stops campaigning for the president, raising money at lavish celebrity events, and offering his strategic and legal advice —and if Eric Holder had an “R” by his name instead of a “D”—he might have served as the perfect poster boy for Mrs. O’s caustic …. He surely knew that dozens of lawyers from his firm were among the 500-plus civilian lawyers representing the 244 or so remaining detainees (on top of military-court-appointed defenders).

Tomorrow at 4ET (1PT) I’m doing a webinar for Netshare called Facebook Essentials for Executives . I’m jazzed about this webinar and have been preparing for it quite a bit. Facebook has power in numbers – and I’m amazed at the connections I’ve made because of Facebook that I didn’t make in LinkedIn. I’m also amazed at the conversation that happens in Facebook that isn’t happening elsewhere

Part of the legacy of that trial was the disclosure of information to the lawyers for the defendants that wound up promptly in the hands of al-Qaeda members who eventually would plan and execute the next attacks on the World Trade Center … I have no doubt that Mr. Holder is an honorable man who took this decision seriously, worried about it, and weighed carefully the advice of his legal team and others in (and perhaps out of) the administration regarding the risks and …

I recently received a call from a good friend who wanted to know if I still loved my job with the same passion that I had for it when I first started work. I was all fired up three years ago; I told all and sundry and everyone else who would listen how I loved what I did and how lucky I was to be paid to do something that made me feel so good about myself; and I could hardly wait to go in to work and start a new day at the office. My friend was worried that she had lost all the passion for her job and that it was now just a routine and mundane affair.

I remember when I finally understood I was supposed to followup with people on a regular basis… networking is about nurturing relationships , right? What about the person you haven’t communicated with for years? What do you followup with them about? People representing from all stages of careers have said to me – “I don’t know what I want to do” or “I don’t really have an ideal or dream career.” This is often followed with “I am certain that it is NOT what I am doing now.” Does this sound familiar? Many people have an easier time articulating what they don’t like, compared to what they do when it comes to work-related activities. I can respect this

Until recently, Jonathan Bernstein, a baby boomer and small-business owner in the Los Angeles area, had plans to “semi-retire.” On turning 60 in 2011, Bernstein had hoped to cut his workload in half, and he and his wife were contemplating purchasing a home in a state with a lower cost of living than California. But those plans have been scuttled now that the couple has seen values dwindle on both their home and Bernstein’s self-employed pension plan

I’ll be periodically posting about interesting topics and discussions going on in the Ludwig von Mises Institute Forum . I encourage anyone interested in the scholarship of liberty in the Austrian tradition to join and partake of the bounty of intellectual stimulation on offer there. One of the best things about the LvMI forum is the passion for lifelong learning that is in the air; the place is chock full of autodidacts who pursue their independent Austrian studies with more dedication than you’re likely to find in any university study hall.

Last year, many employers at the NYU Public Service Job Fair were inundated with resumes, with several employers receiving close to 2,000 applications for interviews. This year, a cap of 500 resumes will be enforced for those employers who request it. Accordingly, for capped employers, applications will be accepted from only the first 500 students who apply to the employer

From a post on Jurist : Nokia’s infringement suit against Apple illustrates need to scrap US patent system Stephan Kinsella [General Counsel for Applied Optoelectronics and Editor of Libertarian Papers ]: “A recent lawsuit filed by Nokia against Apple alleges that the iPhone infringes 10 of Nokia’s patents. Nokia is probably “seeking between $200 and $400 million in damages from Apple,” which JURIST characterizes as “a relatively low amount to seek from a company that expects revenues…of over $11 billion this year.” It doesn’t seem trivial to me, given that $400 million is a good chunk – say, 5 to 10% or so – of Apple’s profits. And Nokia’s is not the only lawsuit Apple faces.
